DOORWAYS

Launch of the 5th Issue of Doorways

On Monday the 30th April, New Farm Neighbourhood Centre in conjunction with Street Smart was proud to launch the 5th issue of Doorways, an anthology of short stories and poems by people you don’t normally hear from.

Doorways Creative Writing Project has been running at New Farm Neighbourhood Centre since 2008, bringing people who live or have lived on the fringe in some way together to share their stories, experiences, strength and hope through the written word.

The 5th Issue of Doorways is the result of a ten week block of creative writing workshops held at New Farm Neighbourhood Centre late last year in which writers explored the theme of Journeys. Officially launched by local Brisbane writer Lesley Sing, the evening featured a speech from Senator Claire Moore, and readings by the writers themselves. Congratulations to all of the writers on producing such high quality work, and for sharing your stories so beautifully with the broader community.

To pick up your free copy of Doorways, come and visit us at New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, or Maida Lilley Community Centre (Green Square in the Valley).

POLITICS in the PUB

Politics in the Pub: Local Election, Local Issues

Thank you to all of those who came along and participated in last Thursday’s Politics in the Pub: Local Election, Local Issues. Approximately 80 people turned up to see the three candidates for Brisbane Central Ward – Heather Beattie (Labor), Vicki Howard (LNP) and Rachael Jacobs (Greens) speak about their future vision for our area. All candidates outlined their vision well, with key themes being Public Transport, the LGBTIQ Community, homelessness and urban development.
Thank you to our Candidates and our community for participating in this community forum. We are currently seeking people who might be interested in helping out with future Politics in the Pub events. If you think you might be interested in shaping the topics, and the events please contact Clare Lindop, Outreach Community Development Worker on clare@newfarmneighbourhood.org. more…
